Lights of Hope Vigil in Port Jefferson honors drug overdose victims

On Saturday, Aug. 31, 2014, Dan’s Foundation for Recovery hosted the Lights of Hope Vigil in the Memorial Park on the Harbor in Port Jefferson, N.Y. The vigil recognized and honored local, deceased victims of drug overdose.  In addition to speeches by recovering addicts and Dori Scofield, the founder of Dan’s Foundation, Legislators Kara Hahn and Sarah Anker also spoke about preventative actions that can be taken through legislation to avoid drug-related deaths.

Port Jefferson, N.Y. is making math and science fun again.

 Located on East Broadway, the Maritime Explorium, which first opened its doors in 2005, provides parents and children in the area a space to participate in educational, hands-on activities together while also exposing children to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects in an environment that highlights Long Island’s maritime history and heritage. Bayles Boat Shop brings boat building back to Long Island

Most mornings on the Port Jefferson, N.Y. harbor front are quiet ones.  But on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon, while locals are jogging or walking their dogs along the water, Bayles Boat Shop is an eruption of construction sounds.  Sawing, drilling, hammering, the works.

An aroma of sawdust and epoxy fills the modest, rectangular shed that sits in the shadow of the Port Jefferson Village Center on East Broadway.  Inside, Long Island Seaport and Eco Center (LISEC) Board of Directors President Betty Ann Arink is making her way around the room, talking to the other 36 boat shop members.  Continue reading →
